Improv practices

Sunday, November 30th, 2003

Laura was sick, and unavailable to coach Affirmative Action today. So, we just sat on the floor and told stories about our lives. I think it’s important that we get to know each other so we can play better with each other. The stories turned into heavy discussions about relationships and life and regrets and stuff. Anyway, it was a good thing for us to do.

After AA practice I stuck around to practice with Slurred Vision. I think they’re the best improv team in Hamilton, and it was fun to play with them. I’d played with a few of them in TheatreSports shows in the summer, and had a lot of fun doing that. This Friday, I’ll be in a show with some of them, so it was cool to get in sync with them again. Here are the details of Friday’s show in case anyone’s interested in coming. :)

Dear Santa

Saturday, November 29th, 2003

I’ve been good this year. If you and your elves have time, I’d love to see any of these things in my stocking.

  • Battery grip for the 10D
  • Manfrotto portable background stand kit
  • Rolls of white, grey and black background paper
  • Background light stand
  • Set of honeycomb grids and gels for the AlienBees
  • Light stand and boom
  • Remote control system for the Bees
  • Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX IF Macro lens
  • I will leave some milk and cookies. :D

    Saturday stuff

I did a workshop at the Staircase Theatre today. It was ok, since I’ve been feeling slightly rusty lately. I enjoyed the opportunity to play with some open scenes. Nothing struck me as being particularly genius. I had a fun silent scene with KPR in which he attempted to forcibly marry me. It was all about the emotional reactions to each other without any words being spoken. Pretty hip.

I also asked to be put on the list of teachers at the Staircase. Hopefully I’ll be teaching drop-in workshops by January.

    What I don’t get is…

Satellite TV doesn’t work well when it’s raining outside. And that’s when I’d want to watch TV. It’s ironic.

    Movies to watch and why…

    Thursday, November 27th, 2003

Ronin – Coolest and realistic car chase ever.

Forrest Gump – “Mamma always said, ‘Stupid is as stupid does.’”

My Cousin Vinny – Marisa Tomei.

Batman – Jack Nicholson as the Joker: “This town needs an enema!” and Prince soundtrack. This is the hippest superhero film ever made, and it didn’t even try to be.

La Bamba – Fun music overlaid onto an incredible story of two very different brothers.

Jerry Maguire – “Show me the money!”

Planes, Trains and Automobiles – Two of my favorite comic actors, Steve Martin and John Candy, play off each other perfectly in this hilarious movie. It could have been pure slapstick, but it was cleverly written so that the characters transform each other gradually into better people. The film has a touching ending that crowns it as one of the greatest comedies ever.

Amadeus – One of music’s towering figures is brought down to Earth.

Lawrence of Arabia – An epic historical drama that’s way before its time. The soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites.

Mystery Men – Absurd and hilarious. It’s a visual treat, and a triumph of unlikely heroes.

I will post more as I think of them!
