Finally!

Thursday, September 30th, 2004

My new website is up and running at http://www.kevinthom.com :) That was pretty grueling, but it was kind of fun too. I haven’t worked to deadline in a while. I have to say the “About” section was the hardest part to do. I’m not very comfortable writing about myself, so it was hard to come up with a format that I could stick to. I wanted it to be in first-person too, because that’s how photographers should connect with their subjects, so I couldn’t even cheat by stealing one of my pre-made bios from before.

Anyway, I needed it up by today because Jen and I agreed to launch our new sites on the same day. She’s going to be announcing mine in her journal, which will probably cause some people to look at it later today. Can you guys tell me if you see anything that needs fixing? :)

I’m going to sleep. Early day ahead. I’m leaving for Toronto at around 6:30 or 7:00 to help my friend Janet move into her new house.

Goodnight.

Website update

So in the last few days, I’ve spent every spare minute I had working on the redesign for my www.kevinthom.com website. It’s not ready yet, but when you finally see it, you’ll probably say, “WTF?! You spent a lot of time doing this?!” It’s not really a radical change from what’s there now. But there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes PHP stuff that I had to relearn… which brings me to an excellent point that Jen made. The older you get, the harder it is to learn new stuff, which means we get excited about remembering stuff we’ve forgotten. See, I ran into many familiar problems but had a hell of a time figuring out how to fix them. This is because my design is not terrily imaginitive and is much like many designs I’ve done in the past, which caused me exactly the same problems at the time. Then, when I did figure out how to fix the problem, I realized that I had found the exact same fix about three years ago but had forgotten how to use it. :|

Anyway, back to the website coding. I’ll be launching it on Thursday I hope. :)

Website content

I should be working on my kevinthom.com website. The content there right now is, well, pathetic. I had made a rough plan for it one night at the Staircase while sitting and watching the drop in workshop. But I really need to get some details down. I had promised myself to start working on it today, but so far that hasn’t happened. I’m making this note in my journal so I can feel nicely guilty about it later if I don’t do anything. Maybe the anticipation of guilt will make me get started. :D

Update

Hmmm.. What’s been happening… lots of stuff I guess. I ordered the greeting cards from Future Photo. Sucks that they’ll have the Future Photo logo on the back, but the price is pretty much unbeatable, and I expect them to be pretty good quality too. I guess I’ll find out soon enough. I’m considering getting new business cards printed before the end of the week to reflect my new phone number, website and email address. But since all of my old contact information still works, there’s little impetus to actually do it.

I started Level 2 of the Impatient Theatre Company’s longform improv training. It’s good to be in a levels-based class again to improve my skills. Occassional workshops are good, but having a steady group of classmates is helpful, as is the structure of the program. I felt I did good, physical work today, and played with some newish characters. I didn’t do anything too groundbreaking, but I felt like I had a good workout. The other people in my class are very cool. Everyone’s different, but contributes equally to the class. The mix is extremely positive. There are four of us from last year’s Level 1 class, and four from another Level 1 class. Of course, I feel very close to the people I knew from last year, and I’m familiar with their styles and abilities. But, we’re quickly learning about the “new” people too. That’s part of the fun. I think we will all grow together quite well as a group over the next couple of months. It should be a great ride. :bounce:

Tonight I played in the Saturday Night Jive show. It was a pretty good show overall. The audience was mainly university students, I think. They were very demanding and made us work for their approval. Sometimes an audience made up of a lot of improvisors can be rather “easy” because they laugh at some of the inside stuff, or realize stuff about the scene that’s only funny to people who know what to look for. Playing to “normal” people was a shot of reality, but I think we did quite well by doing some very intelligent scenes and regularly putting ourselves at risk. It was a good feeling.

Sealed Art

Ok so I finally settled on a framing place. It wasn’t the cheapest, but the frames were nice and I trusted the guy to do a good job. He seemed competent and was able to explain the pricing to me without making my head explode. Anyway, it cost about $980 after taxes to have all the framing done. I know I could have saved a bit by going to the Iranian guy, or somewhere else in the city, but after all is said and done, this guy is just down the street from here, the frames look good, and the price is competitive. More importantly, I don’t have to think about it any more. :)

This is the final list for the show.
